The main Opposition parties, United National Party (UNP) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) are the only Opposition parties in the world who go to Courts when the government decides to hold an election, Hambantota District MP Namal Rajapaksa said.
"When the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) was the Opposition, our leaders held walks and peaceful demonstrations," he added.
Rajapaksa was addressing the opening ceremony of the Divi Neguma weekly fair in Buttala. The fair was established with funds from the Economic Development Ministry on a request by Coconut Development and Janatha Estate Development Minister Jagath Pushpakumara.
"Opposition parties in the world are going forward with elections under accepted international standards. However, in Sri Lanka, the Opposition parties are bankrupt," MP Rajapaksa said.
At present, the helpless Opposition party, UNP, has commenced a media campaign to create a wrong image about Hambantota and Moneragala districts. It was not successful as those two districts are now developing rapidly, he said.
External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris, Co-operatives and Internal Trade Affairs Minister Johnston Fernando, Coconut Development and Janatha Estate Development Minister Jagath Pushpakumara, Disaster Management Deputy Minister Dulip Wijesekara and Buttala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Damayantha Dolewatta were present.
