Sri Lanka Army ladies emerged Cargills Womens’ Open Football Champions when they edged out Navy team in the final by eight goals to seven in the tie breaker penalty shootout after the final played at the Sugathadasa Stadium resulted a score less draw at full time.
Both teams played some entertaining soccer but the forwards could not find the net. Both goal keepers had a tough job saving many goal opportunities.
Twenty two teams played in the tournament sponsored by Cargills (Ceylon) PLC. Teams from North and East too participated at the championship this year.
Sri Lanka Police secured the third place while Kurunegala Leo SC were placed fourth. Winners were awarded attractive cash prizes and certificates apart from the trophies.
Ayomi Wijeratne of SL Army was adjudged the Best Goalkeeper in the final. Navy’s Praveena Maducki won the award for the Best Striker in the final.
