A forty-foot container with cosmetic items, foot-wear and pacifiers valued at Rs.20 million had been seized by the Customs today, the Media Spokesman of the Sri Lanka Customs Leslie Gamini said.
The evaded payment of duty and other levies were about Rs.12 million, he said.
A tea company based in Colombo which had duty free concession to import raw material to re-export after value addition under the Temporary Importation for Export Processing (TIEP) Scheme had imported the container, Gamini said.
The container, arrived in the country on September 7, was seized at a container yard in Grandpass.
The consignment had been declared with forged documents as containing “tea bag cotton threads,” he said.
On examination officials of the Customs Department had found 2,400 cartons containing 7,782 pairs of shoes valued at Rs.5.4 million, 82, 300 soothers valued at Rs.82, 000 and 136,252 pieces of cosmetic items valued at Rs.12 million, he said.
